Research shows the number of African-American males entering and graduating from college continues to stagger greatly behind others. The Asfaw Family Foundation International (AFFI) has designed the “Aim High” scholarship program to increase the number of African-American males enrolled in colleges and universities. This year we hope to impact the lives of ten young men in our community by soliciting their participation in our scholarship program.

Along with financial awards, recipients will receive a new laptop during our 11thAnnual Arches of Hope Bicycle Give-A-way. The Arches of Hope will present 200 bicycles and helmets to 5th and 6th graders nominated by principals and community leaders based on five categories: Scholastic Achievement and Improvement; Good Citizenship; Financial Need; Chronic Illness; or Parents serving in the Military.

The program will take place Sunday, December 1, 2016, at Manual High School’s Thunderdome Gymnasium located at 1700 E. 28th Avenue in Denver. Scholarship recipients must be present to receive their award.

What is Community Recreation within the City and County of Denver?
Community Recreation provides programming and activities for a diverse group of youth, ages 5-16. The Community Recreation team is devoted to engaging the community through facilitating a wide variety of licensed programs and activities. These programs and activities include: After School Programming, Summer/Day Camps, Arts & Crafts, Performing Arts, Health & Wellness, Sports, Cooperative Non-Competitive Games, and Fitness (yoga, etc.). Session Description:

This event will engage providers of pregnant and parenting young people to educate on the barriers faced with breastfeeding, the benefits of breastfeeding that may not be obvious, and to train on effective counseling and interventions, as well as, supportive policies and referral processes in health care settings, schools, and communities that promote breastfeeding. Principles and practices of trauma-informed care will be an underlying theme throughout the day. The event will also provide hands-on training on baby-holding techniques and equipment and supplies for pumping. Other topics related to breastfeeding, such as infant mortality/Safe Sleep, behavioral health issues, and engaging partners and families will also be addressed.

 

*The ONLINE portion of the event will address practices to promote successful breastfeeding interventions with adolescent patients in health care settings. The session will focus on the prenatal, labor and delivery, and postnatal periods and will also feature ways to provide effective referrals to support young parents in breastfeeding. Expert presenters will share how individual providers can support young parents and also describe health care systems elements and protocols that support the provision of the preventive service as well as additional resources to help care providers and those that coordinate the systems they work in to function smoothly, efficiently, and effectively when providing interventions to promote breastfeeding.

 

Intended Audience:

Urban and rural providers that serve pregnant and parenting teens and/or adolescents for health and social services, including, but not limited to:

  • health care systems – hospitals, school-based health centers, school nurse offices, health departments, federally-qualified health centers, behavioral health centers,
