As part of this new youth initiative, ACC is accepting applications for a Youth Specialist to work with Street Fraternity ( http://streetfraternity.org/ ) staff and volunteers to support young men ages 14 - 25 through creative and engaging programming.

Below is a bit more about Street Fraternity.

Street Fraternity

The Street Fraternity is a brotherhood of men who welcome and are committed to a diversity of experiences, ages, ethnicities, histories, national origins, citizenship statuses, opinions, marital statuses, sexual orientations, disabilities, arrest records, religions, political affiliations, and other protected classes as required by law. All participants, employees, and volunteers will actively support this Inclusiveness & Diversity Statement. We welcome women’s involvement as parents, on our Advisory Team and Board, and within our partner agencies.

Over 90% of our participants are former refugees from Bhutan/Nepal, Burma/Thailand, and countries of East, Central and West Africa. Many languages are spoken here.
Participation averages 30 – 50 young men each night.
Our young men live in the East Colfax Avenue area near the Aurora/Denver border.
Many are high school aged and mostly attend either Aurora Central HS or the New America School in the Aurora Public Schools, or George Washington HS or South HS in the Denver Public Schools. Others have either completed or dropped out of high school.

Mission: a place of brotherhood and personal growth for urban young men.

Here is a resource that is a must have for all those working with Adolescents: A Guide To Evidence Based Programs For Adolescent Health

by co9to25

research-2

The past decade has witnessed a tremendous expansion of research and resources on “what works” to improve adolescent health. Despite the greater selection of effective programs and practical tools, this valuable implementation information is difficult to locate in one place. This resource has two aims:

  • To serve as a guide to communities and practitioners for locating effective adolescent health interventions and
  • To identify selected “implementing tools” designed to help communities implement evidence-based programs.

The resources listed in the guide include programs that cover the following areas in adolescent health:

  • Healthy Development
  • Unintentional Injury
  • Violence
  • Mental Health
  • Substance Use
  • Sexual Health
  • Obesity
  • Physical Activity
  • Tobacco Use

This resource is available in two formats.

1. A PDF file is available here. The file has three sections:

  • A brief background that introduces the concept of “evidence-based” programs and considerations for communities to consider in using these programs;
  • A matrix listing web-based resources with evidence-based practices, showing the area(s) of adolescent health addressed by each resource (e.g., substance use, violence);
  • An annotated list of each resource in the matrix.

2. Visitors can access this information on-line without downloading the PDF. The information is available in two parts:

  • The background information the PDF can be read on-line by clicking here.
  • The matrix and annotated list, with direct links to the web-based resource, can be viewed by clicking here.

YLTI FLTI Poster

I am excited to announce the launch of our Youth Leadership Development curriculum! This science based curriculum, developed by experts at CSU in partnership with the authors of the award-winning Dare To Be You leadership curriculum , is built on adolescent brain development science and is designed to complement the Family Leadership Training Institute (FLTI) curriculum. The entire FLTI network/team is thrilled to build on all the Two-Generational and Positive Youth Development work that has established Colorado as a national leader.

There are two locations in Colorado who will be offering this specialized curriculum: Denver Five Points and Fort Collins. These two pilot locations will offer parallel training on the same night - the adults growing through the FLTI curriculum, while in another room the young people will be growing through the youth curriculum. Both groups will share learnings at the beginning and end of class so as to develop and promote Two-Generational Learning!

The class in Adams County, will continue to offer the FLTI curriculum in Spanish. While this location will not be using the newly designed youth curriculum, they historically have had the largest enrollment of young people participate in class with great success. We encourage young people who prefer to receive a leadership development class in mono-linguqal Spanish, to participate in the Adams County FLTI class.

As always, the Y/FLTI experience is FREE, held once a week in a community location and has proven outcomes leading to better health, increased community engagement and self-empowerment!

Please join me in getting the word out - we are actively recruiting for class participants in all FLTI locations, but specifically for the Youth Leadership locations! See the flyer below and refer to our website for more information and for the online application - www.ColoradoFamilyLeadership.com
