White Privilege Glasses: New Video Asks ‘Can You See White Privilege?’

by co9to25

The project, called “White Privilege Glasses,” comes from a Chicago-based seminary.

Ever wish you could help White people recognize the privilege they enjoy and how it impacts people of color? A new video campaign from the Chicago Theological Seminary (CTS) aims to do just that.

Called “White Privilege Glasses,” the video depicts a White man seeing the world—from interactions with everyone from the police to taxi drivers—through the eyes of his Black friends. The progressive, interfaith seminary explains the impetus behind the video on its website:

The mission of CTS is to work towards greater social justice. And nowhere is this more needed than in the area of race. To this end, CTS has created a web video to shine the light on White privilege. We believe the racial divide will only change when the collective “we” understand the concepts of privilege and begin to identify and correct the systems that advantage one group over the other. We intend for this White Privilege Glasses video to spark discussions and inspire dialogue about this very serious issue. We want to start people thinking, talking…acting.

Youth voice fighting to protect their education and passion

by co9to25

Peter, one of the student’s feature, has been involved in our My Brother’s Keeper Initiative work, and reached out when DPS announced they were looking to close NCAS middle school. He and his peers were present at the community meeting and did an amazing job. They were also able to meet with DPS school board members. In the end, the DPS school board has decided to give the school more time. I think it’s so important for youth to get these victories. I just wanted to share as I know 9 to 25 is always looking to collect stories. Thanks.

Happy Super Bowl Week!

by co9to25

I’m sure everyone is excited about the Super Bowl this Sunday but I wanted to also share with you an opportunity for youth to get connected with an amazing local artist duo The ReMINDers. The 303 choir’s 4th annual Colorado Hip-Hop Music Weekend. This is a free of charge event taking place Friday, February 5th from 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM and Saturday, February 6th from 1:00 PM – 8:30 PM. Over this time period youth will work alongside these amazing artist and learn their songs in preparation for a community performance the following evening.

The ReMINDers https://youtu.be/4x_pqzEga0A

I was honored to host one of these events 2 years ago at St. Charles Recreation Center and I can truly say it has been one of the highlights in 20 plus years of working with youth. Not only are the artist amazing artist, they are even more amazing people who have chosen to create art that unites and is accessible to everyone. Travis from the Colorado Children’s Chorale has done an amazing job with this annual event. Please share this information with any and all youth that you can as I assure you that if they attend this event their weekend would made even more super. Let me know if you have any questions or if there are youth that are interested in attending but might face some logistical barriers. Let’s brainstorm and figure it out. I’ve also included a link to one of the ReMINDers videos. Thanks!
