Sarah Casteel
Clayton, MO
YSA honors 18-year-old Sarah Casteel of Clayton, Missouri for tackling the issue of hunger in her community.
Sarah became the Director of Saint Louis Food Rescue when others couldn’t commit to the organization. As a teen-based organization, Saint Louis Food Rescue serves as a link between food retailers and food insecure populations, and her contributions were desperately needed in the summer of 2013. Sarah took on the responsibility of making six food deliveries each week to food pantries to ensure that nobody would go hungry. She also manages retailers, recipients, volunteers, donors, as well as all planning and advertising for events. Because of her work, 30 teen volunteers deliver 5,000 pounds of food to hundreds of hungry and homeless people every week. Hundreds of inspired youth and adults have volunteered for deliveries and events since Sarah started leading the organization.
Sarah also single-handedly coordinated the Pumpkin Project last October. Volunteers brought leftover Halloween pumpkins to a culinary school to make pumpkin puree. The puree is made into breads, pies and soup for homeless residents throughout the year.
For inspiring others to become passionate anti-hunger advocates every week, and for reviving a much-needed organization, we honor Sarah Casteel as an Everyday Young Hero. To learn more about Saint Louis Food Rescue visit http://stlfoodrescue.org
