COLLEGE IN COLORADO HOSTS ANNUAL COLLEGE APPLICATION MONTH DURING OCTOBER

Students are encouraged to use CollegeInColorado.org for college
application prep and for a chance to win giveaways

DENVER- College In Colorado, a division of the Colorado Department of Higher Education, will again host College Application Month during the month of October. The goal of College Application Month is to provide every graduating high school senior with the preparation and opportunity to apply to college, with the help of the resources available onCollegeInColorado.org.

While the focus of College Application Month is primarily on students who are the first in their family to go to college and students who may not otherwise apply to college, participating high schools are encouraged to create a school-wide college-going culture, by including activities for freshmen, sophomores and juniors, and even seniors who have already applied to college.

“Applying for college can be very daunting for any student or parent who is not familiar with the process,” said Dawn Taylor Owens, executive director of College In Colorado. “We have broken down the application process, using the tools and resources available on CollegeInColorado.org, so students and parents can prepare throughout the entire month. Our hope is that once they sit down at the computer to apply at the end of October, they will have all the necessary elements to do so successfully.”

To help prepare schools for the event, College In Colorado has provided students and educators with a calendar, timeline, checklist, and much more. As an incentive for students participating in College Application Month, College In Colorado will host a weekly laptop drawing for all students and 10 College “Go Packs” with first year college essentials for seniors. Educators are also encouraged to get involved in College Application Month for their own chance to win two $400 Ikea School Improvement Gift Card.

College In Colorado’s College Application Month is part of a nationwide college application assistance initiative, which has grown significantly just since 2014, when it reached 39 states and the District of Columbia, 2,500 schools and 150,000 students—and generated 220,000 college applications. By 2020, American College Application Campaign (ACAC) is projected to reach 90 percent of high schools nationwide and result in the participation of 1.5 million students who otherwise might not have applied for college.

Congressional Black Caucus Health Braintrust Releases 2015 Kelly Report on Health Disparities in America

by co9to25

Congressional analysis of the state of Black health in the U.S. offers comprehensive legislative and policy solutions to improve health outcomes in communities of color

WASHINGTON – The Congressional Black Caucus Health Braintrust has releasedThe 2015 Kelly Report on Health Disparities in America, an official Congressional analysis of the state of African American health in the U.S. that offers a blueprint for reversing negative health trends in communities of color.

The Kelly Report brings together Members of Congress, medical professionals and public health thought leaders to examine the root causes and impact of health disparities in America and provide a comprehensive set of legislative and policy recommendations to address them. Compiled by CBC Health Braintrust Chair Dr. Robin Kelly, the report is a call-to-action for Congress to make improving health outcomes in diverse communities a top priority. The contributors to the report include Congressional Black Caucus Chair G.K. Butterfield, National Urban League President & CEO Marc H. Morial, former U.S. Surgeon General David Satcher, and HHS Deputy Assistant Secretary for Minority Health Dr. J. Nadine Gracia.

“Inequities in health and healthcare in communities of color remain deep and persistent, spanning from cradle to the grave, as evidenced by the higher rates of chronic disease and premature death. Many of the health disparities that exist are shaped by generations of cultural bias, injustice and inequality,” Kelly said. “Despite the gains of the Affordable Care Act, we have much ground to cover in closing the health equity gap.”

To improve Black health outcomes, the Kelly Report proposes a five-point plan to reduce health disparities that focuses on Access, Workforce Diversity, Innovation & Research, Community Engagement and Federal Action on Healthcare. The Kelly Report on Health Disparities in America can be viewed here.

“The whole can only ever be as healthy as its parts. For America to achieve true health equity, lawmakers, community leaders and public health stakeholders must come together to promote better health outcomes for diverse communities. Your ethnicity, zip code or bank balance should never determine your health,” Kelly said. “Though there are a number of challenges in addressing health disparities, there are also many opportunities to advance and achieve health equity. We all have a role to play in creating a healthier America and the Kelly Report is a contribution toward this critical effort.”

This Year’s Theme: Rewriting Your Story

Each of us has the power to go beyond our comfort zones to make our dreams a reality.

We have turned the skill of goal setting into a creative day called Re-Writing Your Story. Using written, visual and theatre arts, we will practice setting new visions and dreams for ourselves and re-writing the story of our lives to prove reaching our goals is possible.

Announcing Lodging Reimbursement Scholarships!

This year we are pleased to announce reimbursement scholarships to offset lodging expenses for groups traveling 75 miles or more to the summit. Thank you to one of our partners, The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, for helping make the summit a truly state wide event.

Applications are due by September 30, and approved on a first come, first served basis to those eligible. Act now to complete your application during the early bird registration period.

The reimbursement scholarship application is available on the CO9to25 websitewww.co9to25.org or you may email Mark Pergola at Mark.s.pergola@kp.org

https://www.eventbrite.com/e/colorado-9to25-youth-summit-tickets-18106705644

Our nominal registration fee includes breakfast, lunch, an afternoon snack and all supplies. This registration fee offsets less than 25% of the per person cost of producing this event. It is the generosity of our many partners who are part of the collaboration and the CO9to25 movement that make this possible. That said, we are committed to the summit being accessible to, and meaningful for, all youth ages 13-19 and adults who work with them. Emailmark.s.pergola@kp.org if our registration fee poses a hardship or barrier to attendance.
