EVERYDAY YOUNG HEROES: Will Lourcey

YSA recognizes 10-year-old Will Lourcey of Fort Worth, Texas, as an Everyday Young Hero for his commitment to fighting hunger and raising awareness about food insecurity.

Will’s passion for helping the hungry came when he saw a man on a street corner holding a sign that said: Need a Meal. Upon learning that there were people in his community that didn’t have enough food to eat, he created FROGs - Friends Reaching Our Goals, that raises awareness and money for the hungry, educates his Through his partnerships with local food banks, local elected officials, and college athletes in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area, FROGs has provided over 75,000 meals to those in need and helped raise over $20,000 for local food banks.

FROGs motto is: Having Fun while Helping Others, and that’s just what they did on National Make A Difference Day! FROGs’ project was “Bags for a Difference,” a project designed to meet the needs of the Mobile Food Pantry patrons and help make their day a little bit easier.

“I’ve been volunteering at the Mobile Food Pantry for 2 years, and time after time I’ve watched the people go through the lines and have problems carrying their groceries,” Will Lourcey said. “Some people bring empty suitcases to carry their groceries in…and some people bring empty baby strollers and pile the food in them; It made me sad inside….so I decided to do something about it: provide reusable eco-friendly grocery bags!”

FROGs partnered with the Tarrant Area Food Bank and United Community Centers to volunteer and distribute meals and grocery bags to the hungry. There were over 50 volunteers participating at the site and they served 12 tons of food to 483 households.
