FEMA Encourages Young People to Join Youth Preparedness Council

by co9to25

Washington, D.C. – The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) today announced it is seeking applicants for its Youth Preparedness Council. The Council supports FEMA’s commitment to involving youth in preparedness-related activities and provides an opportunity for young people to offer their perspectives, feedback and insights on how to help make America more resilient.

“Young people play a key role in advancing emergency preparedness and informing our efforts,” said FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate. “The Youth Preparedness Council offers FEMA the unique opportunity to benefit from the perspectives of young people, while also empowering them to engage with their communities to increase readiness.”

FEMA’s Youth Preparedness Council was formed in 2012 to bring together youth leaders from across the country who are interested and engaged in advocating youth preparedness. Council members are selected based on their dedication to public service, their efforts in making a difference in their communities, and their potential to expand their impact as national advocates for youth preparedness.

As advocates for preparedness, Council members will complete a self-selected youth preparedness project and have the opportunity to share their opinions, ideas, solutions and questions about youth disaster preparedness with FEMA leadership and national organizations working on preparedness initiatives. Members also have the opportunity to brief FEMA officials on strategies, initiatives and projects throughout their one-year term.

To apply, Youth Preparedness Council applicants must be 13 to 17 years old. They must also be engaged in individual and community preparedness or have experienced a disaster that motivated them to make a positive difference in their community. Individuals who applied for 2014 are encouraged to apply again. Current Council members have an option to extend for an additional year, upon FEMA request. Adults working with youth or on community preparedness are encouraged to share the application with young people who might be interested in applying for the Youth Preparedness Council.

To be eligible for consideration, applicants must submit a completed application form and two letters of recommendation. Completed applications and all supporting materials must be received no later than March 2, 2015, 11:59 p.m. EST. New Youth Preparedness Council members will be announced in May 2015.

For more information about completing and submitting the application, please visit: www.ready.gov/youth-preparedness-council.

Join Us As We Innovate For Good In 2015

by co9to25

Rose Community Foundation is launching a new and exciting project called Innovate for Good - a challenge designed to find and fund new ideas to make the Greater Denver community a better place to live.

Innovate for Good will award up to 10 grants totaling $250,000 to fund projects that answer the following question: What new and innovative idea would you bring to life to make the Greater Denver community a better place to live?

Ideas should reflect creative, new approaches and should be able to make a positive, measurable difference within one year. Ideas and proposals will be reviewed by Rose Community Foundation and a committee of community members from a wide variety of backgrounds and professions. Nearly anyone can submit an idea to be considered for funding - artists, engineers, nonprofits, neighborhood associations, teenagers, retirees - you name it. We have a very simple online application, and finalists will be invited to pitch their ideas at our 20th Anniversary celebration in early June.

We hope you can help spread the word about this exciting new project and consider submitting an idea yourself! You can find the latest information on our website. We will also be posting updates and reminders on our Facebook page. You can read our news release about this new project here.

Laura Graham

A family conversation about what it would be like to be in foster care as a teenager sparked a conversation and an idea. Laura learned that foster teens receive $200 per year for personal care and clothing. As a result teens often felt left out and did not attend school. Laura believed she could make a difference, and took action! Laura’s idea to clothe needy teens has helped change lives and put teens back in the classroom. Her initial idea launched in January 2011, and within a year 1Closet became the go-to organization for social service agencies in the SF Bay Area in need of teen clothing.” …»

Register TODAY, trust me you’ll want to register right away for the Brothers Keeper Youth Summit Kickoff!!!

by co9to25

Greetings,

In February 2014 the Obama Administration issued the My Brother’s Keeper Initiative to address the disproportionate gaps of success for boys and young men of color. The administration challenged cities across the country to become more strategic in addressing this issue. Over the past several months the Office of Children’s Affairs has being convening meetings and sessions with key stakeholders across the city to hear their thoughts and get their ideas on how to address this important issue. Throughout this process we have heard overwhelming young men should be at the table as a part of this process.

In an effort to assure that authentic youth voice is present in the work of the My Brother’s Keeper Initiative, the Office of Children’s Affairs has been partnering with local youth serving community organizations to create dialogue with young men to get their own perspective, as well as to hear their ideas regarding solutions. On Saturday, February 14th the Office of Children’s Affairs, along with other key youth serving community organizations, will be hosting the My Brother’s Keeper Youth Summit. This gathering of young men from across the city will look to go deeper with these conversations and to begin creating strategies to address the issues many of these young men face. We are asking you to spread the word to young men ages 14-24 about this summit and encourage them to attend the summit. We feel that youth are the experts on what they need to succeed and it is vital they have a platform and avenue to have their voices heard and honored. There is a flyer attached with details and a link below where youth can register. Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions. Thanks.
