Meet Maria she’s an awesome youth helping others in unique ways
|
Maria KellerPlymouth, MNYSA honors thirteen-year-old Maria Keller of Plymouth, Minnesota for addressing literacy issues in communities across the United States. Beginning at a young age, Maria nurtured her passion for helping others in unique ways, and at age eight, founded Read Indeed, a 501c3 nonprofit that collects and distributes books to kids in need. As an avid reader, Maria became aware that many children throughout the U.S. and beyond do not own books. Maria set a goal to collect and distribute 1 million books to children in need by the time she turned 18. For the past five years, Maria used her organizational skills, love of reading, creativity, and tenacity, to collect more than 1,031,000 books for at-risk children. Through the more than 1 million donations, Read Indeed has provided new and gently used books to more than 250 schools, hospitals, homeless shelters, organizations that serve at-risk children and teens throughout the country. For recognizing the importance of reading both inside and outside of the classroom in order to foster enduring academic success by providing youth with access to books, we honor Maria Keller as an Everyday Young Hero.
