Here’s A Great Event for Youth and Adults!!!!
As we continue the work of the My Brother’s Keeper Initiative this year, we are excited to launch an effort to increase the capacity for mentoring for boys and young men of color, both formal and informal, starting in January 16th. Though we know there are different obstacles that make it harder for these youth to maximize their potential, as well as many different issues needing to be addressed, we also know that a relationship with a trusting adult is a key component for these youth to succeed. Because of this need, one of the goals of the MBK Initiative in 2016 is to build a larger capacity of mentors in Denver. This includes increasing the number ofmentoring, offering on-going trainings for mentors that allow them to be better mentors, focus on informal mentoring as much as much as formal mentoring, and continue to work to assure that every youth in Denver, both male and female, has a positive relationship with a trusting adult. Though the MBK Initiative is focusing on boys and young men of color, this mentoring effort will be inclusive of all youth.
To launch this effort we are partnering with Friends First and their Mentor Life Summit on January 16th at Manual High School. Please see the attached “save the date’ for details. At this event we will be giving an update on the MBK efforts in Denver and Mayor Hancock will address the efforts the city will be taking to support the launch of the MBK Mentoring Initiative. Youth will be there throughout the day and given the opportunity to take dynamic workshops alongside their peers. We hope you will join on us on this special day. Though there will be an official invitation coming, feel free to go ahead and RSVP at mybrotherskeeper@denvergov.org. If you have youth that would be interested in attending, please email Michael Simmons atMichael.Simmons@denvergov.org as we have reserved some spots to attend at no-cost to the youth.
